He had never met anyone like her. Strong, independent, smart, she rode a horse as well as any man. If she lacked some of the shallow city graces of the girls he had known in St. Louis, well, she surely made up for with her rich laughter. Any man would want a woman like that beside him.

“Listen, Angie. I … I, ah …”

What’s wrong with me? Durrell cursed himself silently. Why are my hands shaking?

“My … my, uh …” His mouth could not seem to form the words.

Angie Cass glanced up. Barely sixteen, she had the knowing eyes of a woman.

They heard the sound of horses.

I warned you to stay away,” came the harsh voice of Dirk McGonigle, and they both knew the day had just turned deadly.

Tom Durwood is a teacher, writer and editor with an interest in history. Tom most recently taught English Composition and Empire and Literature at Valley Forge Military College, where he won the Teacher of the Year Award five times. Tom has taught Public Speaking and Basic Communications as guest lecturer for the Naval Special Warfare Development Group at the Dam’s Neck Annex of the Naval War College.

Tom edits an open-access scholarly journal, The Journal of Empire Studies (www.empirestudies.org).
