Description

“Gong Ji, Mister President!” cried Holcombe —
The full-text versions of eight stories featuring teens at turning points in history.

Ulysses S. Grant’s little-heralded trip around the world is the setting for the title story in Tom Durwood’s collection of old-fashioned adventure fiction.

Young protagonists take on all manner of treachery and obstacles in a wide range of historical eras. In these pages, you will take part in a violent battle over succession in the Benin kingdoms, meet a young clerk who gets pulled into a murderous plot in 17th century Amsterdam, witness revenge in a cowboy saloon, and much more.

In the novella “The Boatman’s Daughter,” we meet Salima, daughter of the Nile, a determined young woman who fights for her people during the colossal construction of the Suez Canal. The collection’s title story shows a different side to the gruff 18th American President, as he joins forces with a group of Chinese teens to thwart assassins.

Readers of Louis L’Amour and Robert E. Howard will find themselves in familiar territory.

Excerpts

… their pursuers  closing in ..  Song Li drew back the last arrow on his bow  the horde was almost on top of them

Suddenly a horseman carrying a lantern emerged from the trees at the center of the grove.

For a long moment, the horseman dominated the scene without speaking. He raised a lantern; the light helped the commotion to quiet down. All parties stopped and looked: the rider was dramatically framed by the trees and limned in the light from torches carried by riders who now emerged from the forest behind him.

Now the riders spread out, surrounding the grove.

My name is Ulysses S. Grant,” said the figure holding the lantern.
